Guide to Fall Foliage in Kansas City

September is literally right around the corner and the single biggest question I get when it comes to booking photos in the fall is “When is the best time for the trees to change colors?” Honestly, it’s hit or miss on when exactly the big glorious change will happen so I thought I would put together some comparisons so you can guesstimate for yourself when the best time for you will be.

The images directly below were all shot in early September, 2016 | 2017 | 2018.
The majority of trees are still green and the yellow you see is sunlight hitting the leaves at various times of the day.

The images directly below were all shot in early-mid October, 2016 | 2017 | 2018.
Leaves are starting to fall on the ground, all it takes is a good storm to knock a lot of leaves off the trees which is probably what happened in 2016. Trees are thinning and more light shines through the trees. October is when I start doing the majority of my sessions in the evenings as it’s getting pretty chilly in the mornings or if it rains the night before we have time for the ground to dry out. October is PRIME TIME for fall foliage and I highly recommend finding a date that works for you in October if that’s what you’re wanting. We will at least have the type of colors you see in the photos below but maybe we’ll luck out with the glorious color we all love, you just never know when or where it might find us.

JACKPOT COLORS:
It seems there’s a very small window in the Fall where the foliage is just MAGICAL. Last year it fell in late October and I was able to capture this session at Unity Village on Oct 27th before a storm rolled into town and blew everything off the trees. Jackpot colors are not guaranteed, but they tend to happen in late October.

The images directly below were all shot early-mid November, 2016 | 2017 | 2018.
This month is truly weather dependent but the majority of color from the trees is gone and really is a signal of changing seasons from Fall to Winter. Depending on which park we’re in, leaves will be on the ground and the weather will be chilly. All but one of this year’s November sessions are in the late afternoons and I only offer a couple park locations in November (Loose Park on Nov 3rd and Antioch Park on Nov 23rd), the rest are urban locations.
