I have two parks here in the Johnson County area that I love shooting open field sessions in both Spring and the Fall, one being Heritage Park located in south Olathe. When scouting for locations for my mini sessions, I always keep in mind ease of many families being able to park and find me and this one spot fits the bill and is right off the parking lot. These are always evening shoots as the light is the most softest the hour or so before the sun sets (Golden Hour). One variable we have is always the light, will be get clouds or will be see mainly sun and the weather we get the day we shoot can affect the outcome of the photos. Here are some great examples of timing, weather, and season in the variety of looks.
The first two families shown were photographed on the same evening last Spring time where we had some cloud but you could still see some sky, this type of cloud cover is my favorite because it gives depth to the sky and gives a beautiful touch to the photos.
The next two families shown were photographed back in the early Fall (September) and we had a particularly cloudy overcast evening is which is why the sky is white in the background as the sun was very low. Still looks pretty and the clouds acted as a diffuser for the light so we had soft even light on the families.
And these two families were photographed in November of last year late in the fall, but as you can see we still had some wavy grass which is nice to find for fall imagery. We also had full sun that evening and the first session shown was earlier in the lineup, so we had a lot of bright sunshine in her images and we always shoot with the sun to their backs. The set of the sisters were photographed right as the sun was setting that same evening and you can see just a kiss of sunlight through their curls. So the timing of the session in the hour we shoot can be an important deciding factor to consider whether you want more sun in your photos (book earlier in the hour) or just a kiss of sun with that golden hue right near the end. Again, it’s never guaranteed as the weather can be hit or miss, but plan for a sunny day and decide which look you like best and if it’s cloudy we’ll roll with it!
